The first Embassy of the Republic of Abkhazia was created ten years ago. The Embassy of the Republic of Abkhazia in the Russian Federation was established by the Decree of Sergey Bagapsh the President of the country on November 13, 2008. Igor Akhba was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Abkhazia to Russia by another presidential decree.
The establishment of the Embassy in the Russian capital Moscow became possible after an act of recognition of Abkhazia’s independence by Russia on August 26, 2008 and the subsequent establishment of diplomatic relations.
Igor Akhba presented a letter of credence to President Dmitry Medvedev at a ceremony in the Alexander Hall of the Kremlin On January 16, 2009.
Initially, the Embassy was located in the building of the UPDK Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in Mamonovsky Lane, 4. Currently, the Embassy is located in a historical mansion in Gagarinsky Lane, 11.
Before the establishment of the Embassy from 1992 to 2008, the Plenipotentiary Representation of the Republic of Abkhazia in the Russian Federation functioned in Moscow, headed by Igor Akhba, appointed by Vladislav Ardzinba, the First President of the Republic of Abkhazia.
The Embassy, representing the Republic of Abkhazia in the Russian Federation, is guided by the laws of Abkhazia, the Regulations on the Embassy, the instructions of Raul Khadzhimba, the President of RA and in accordance with bilateral agreements. The embassy is working in various directions. This is a political, socio-economic, cultural and educational activities. There is a Sunday school at the Embassy, where anyone can learn the language, literature, traditions of the Abkhaz.
