On March 14, 2023, the 14th meeting of the Coordinating Mechanism for the Search for Missing Persons was held in Belgrade, the Republic of Serbia, with the participation of the Abkhaz and Georgian sides.

The meeting under the Coordination Mechanism was organized through the mediation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, which acts as a neutral intermediary and continues to provide maximum support in the search and identification of missing persons.

Since the establishment of the Coordinating Mechanism, the remains of 520 people have been found and exhumed, of which 215 have been identified and handed over to families for burial. This became possible thanks to the commitment of all participants in this purely humanitarian process. Now, more than 1900 people remain on the list of missing people.

During the meeting, the participants exchanged with information on possible places of burial of missing persons.

The need to intensify efforts to find new information on possible burial sites was stressed.

The coordinating mechanism to clarify the fate of people missing in Abkhazia in 1992-93 was established in 2010 under the auspices of the ICRC and operates in accordance with international humanitarian law.

The ICRC continues to support the work of the Coordinating Mechanism as a neutral humanitarian organization.
