Information that the political party “For Truth” led by the writer Zakhar Prilepin, has presented an election program in which, in particular, it is proposed, through a referendum, to decide on the accession of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to the Russian Federation has appeared in a number of Russian media.

The presentation of this election program of the Russian political party encourages us to publicly urge the party leaders and social movements to carefully study the specifics and political status of states in respect of which the certain intentions are officially voiced.

The Republic of Abkhazia has been a sovereign, independent state since 1993. The sovereign political status of Abkhazia is enshrined in the 1994 Constitution and in the Act on the State Independence adopted in 1999 following the results of a nationwide referendum.

The relations between the two countries are built on a legal basis and are allied in nature after the Russian Federation recognized the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia in 2008. The most important treaties governing interstate relations between Abkhazia and Russia are the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance of September 17, 2008 and the Treaty of Alliance and Strategic Partnership of November 24, 2014. The Russian Federation assists in the establishment of the Republic of Abkhazia as an independent state, strengthening its international position and socio-economic recovery.

The allied nature of the Abkhaz-Russian interstate relations, ensuring the security and economic development of the Abkhaz state, fully reflects the will of the people - citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Moreover, the Republic of Abkhazia respects the free choice of citizens of certain states in favor of joining another state or interstate association.
