The Chairman of the Federation of Abkhazian Cultural Centers in Turkey (Abkhazfed) Murat Makharia, on behalf of the Abkhazfed, expressed support for the call of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia, Inal Ardzinba, to the Secretary General of the United Nations to grant the Republic of Abkhazia the status of an observer state in the UN.
The address reads, in part:
“The Federation of the Abkhazian Cultural Centers in Turkey supports the call of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia, Inal Ardzinba, to the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to grant the Republic of Abkhazia the status of an observer state in the UN.
We are convinced that ensuring the equality of rights of large and small nations is possible only if equal opportunities are provided to all states and nations in conveying their positions to the world community.
The participation of the Republic of Abkhazia in the discussions of the UN General Assembly will enable the member countries of the organization to receive objective information about the situation in the region and will create conditions for the formation of a fair opinion about the Republic of Abkhazia.
We believe that granting the Republic of Abkhazia the status of an observer state in the UN will be a confirmation of the commitment of the United Nations to the principle of universality of UN membership, and will become an important step in maintaining and enhancing peace and stability in the Black Sea region of the Caucasus. Let the World hear the voice of the people of the Republic of Abkhazia firsthand.”
