Representatives of Abkhazia take part as observers in the presidential elections in the Syrian Arab Republic

The presidential elections in the Syrian Arab Republic are being held today, on May 26,2021. The Representatives from Abkhazia, Russia, South Ossetia, China, Iran, Iraq and Belarus take part in the elections as the international observers. The observers from the Republic of Abkhazia are Bagrat Khutaba, the Ambassador of the Republic of Abkhazia to the Syrian Arab Republic, Kuteiba Fom Hasan, the Assistant of the Ambassador and Zhanbu Abaza Agrba, the Embassy Counselor for Work with Diaspora.

The approximate number of the observers is about 200 people, 3-4 people at each site according to Bagrat Khutaba. The observers from Abkhazia are assigned to three voting stations.

Three candidates are running for the head of state: Bashar al-Assad, the incumbent President, Abdullah Sallum Abdullah, the former State Minister as well as Mahmoud Ahmed Murai, the patriotic opposition spokesman who leads the Syrian Democratic Front (SDF).

The previous presidential elections in Syria were held in 2014 on an alternative basis. 73.5% of the Syrian citizens took part in the voting. Bashar al-Assad, the leader of the Arab Socialist Revival Party, won the elections receiving the support of 88.7% of voters
