We drew attention to the video message of Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany to the participants in the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Angela Merkel expressed her concern over the situation in Belarus, in eastern Ukraine, in Crimea and in a number of other regions of the world, during her speech. “If we look at the external borders of Europe, it will become obvious to us that peace and security, stability as well as prosperity are not taken for granted today. The situation in Belarus, eastern Ukraine and Crimea, Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh and, of course, Syria and Libya is more than alarming. There we see everywhere how fundamental rights and not least freedom of the press are under pressure, ” said Angela Merkel.

If the German Chancellor had limited her “concern” to Ukraine, this could still be understood on the basis of Berlin's policy of publicly encouraging of the Kiev authorities. But in such an arbitrary expansion of the list of countries and regions of concern to Berlin, there is a clearly inadequate desire of the German Chancellor to try on the role of the world’s policeman, "supervising" the order not only in Ukraine and Belarus, but also in the Middle East and the South Caucasus.

It is symptomatic that although the statement of the German Chancellor speaks of the "alarming situation" in a number of regions, the question of the reasons for this state of affairs is ignored. So, Angela Merkel does not seem to notice the extremely provocative actions of Kiev, aimed at aggravating of the situation in Donbass. Nor does the Chancellor of Germany see the associated increased activity of the United States and NATO countries in the Black Sea.

The necessary measures should be taken to reduce the tensions in the eastern Ukraine, in the context of the risky course of escalation in the Donbass, Berlin and other European capitals, which Ukraine is pursuing today. But instead of this, there is only provocative rhetoric, traditional for European politicians, and unwillingness to help in any way to defuse the situation. You can predict what serious consequences such actions can lead to.

We are convinced that a genuine settlement in the eastern Ukraine as well as in other conflict regions, presupposes strict observance of previously reached agreements, abandoning the course of encouraging provocations and facilitating of the constructive dialogue between the parties concerned.
