Comment of the MFA of the Republic of Abkhazia
7 March 2017 805
On March 6, the US State Department's press service issued a statement expressing "deep concern" about the closure of two checkpoints on the state border of the Republic of Abkhazia across the Ingur River.

The statement replicates already hackneyed incantations that the closure of these checkpoints allegedly entails a restriction of the freedom of movement of people, as well as certain "humanitarian difficulties". Moreover, according to the authors of the published statement, it seems that the closure of the checkpoint "undermines international discussions in Geneva." Unceremoniously it is required to reopen the two already closed checkpoints.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia is forced to reiterate that the decision taken by the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia fully complies with national legislation, meets the interests of the security of all its citizens and is not subject to revision. On Monday, March 6, the official closing ceremony of the Bhora (Otobaya) and Bataiguara (Nabakia) checkpoints took place.

In this regard, all kinds of "appeals" to the leadership of Abkhazia about the cancellation of the adopted decision, which can follow from the countries-friends of Georgia or representatives of international structures, are meaningless and cannot cause anything other than bewilderment.

We call on all friends of Georgia, including international organizations, to stop speculating on a matter that applies exclusively to the internal affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia.

As for the Geneva discussions mentioned in the statement of the US foreign policy department, it should be noted that they are undermined by the counterproductive position of Tbilisi, because of which the adoption of the document on the nonuse of force is broken every time.
