A consular department has been created at the Embassy of the Republic of Abkhazia in the Syrian Arab Republic to assist compatriots living in the Syrian Arab Republic, the development of trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian ties between the Republic of Abkhazia and the Syrian Arab Republic.

Shonia will deal with a wide range of issues related to the intensification of interaction between the Republic of Abkhazia and the constituent entities of the Russian Federation included in the federal district.

The document became the first interstate agreement of the Republic of Abkhazia signed on January 22, 1993, during the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia of 1992-1993.
