29 March 2017 1408
From March 28 to 29, 2017, the 39-th round of the Geneva International Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia took place in Geneva.

The delegation of the Republic of Abkhazia, headed by Daur Kove, the Minister of Foreign Affairs included Lasha Avidzba, Tengiz Tarba, Timur Shanava, Arthur Gagulia and Asta Chukbar, officials of the Abkhazian Foreign Ministry.

At the 39-th round of the Geneva discussions, the traditional focus was on working towards a joint declaration of commitment to the non-use of force, which would be an important step towards the signing of a legally binding agreement on the non-use of force between Georgia and Abkhazia and Georgia and South Ossetia as the main goal of the Geneva discussions.

During the discussions important issues concerning the Republic of Abkhazia were discussed such as: the continuing practice of discrimination against citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia by Georgia and its Western friends, attempts of international isolation of the Republic of Abkhazia, the problem of non-recognition of vital documents issued in Abkhazia made by Georgia on the 34th Session of the UN Human Rights Council politicized draft resolution, which presented a distorted picture of the situation in Abkhazia.

Representatives of Abkhazia highlighted the issue of the two closed on the border with Georgia checkpoints at the decision of the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia, assessed the unreasonable statements made by the EU, NATO, OSCE, the US State Department to the authorities of Abkhazia in connection with this, and expressed serious concern by building up the military partnership between NATO and Georgia and, in particular, the intention of the Georgian military command to establish a base of NATO Coast Guard in Poti.

At the beginning of the discussion with the moderators of the refugee problem in the second working group on humanitarian issues, the Abkhaz, Russian and South Ossetian delegations left the meeting room in protest.

The next 40-th round of the Geneva International Discussions on Security and Stability in Transcaucasia is scheduled on June 20-21, 2017.
