On September 27, 1993, despite suffering of significant losses, Abkhaz forces overcame enemy resistance and liberated Sukhum. This event marked a pivotal moment in the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia.

The operation to liberate the Abkhaz capital, which lasted 12 days was led by Sultan Sosnaliev, Minister of Defense Major General and Major General Sergey Dbar, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Abkhazia.

September 27 is observed annually in Abkhazia as the Day of the Liberation of Sukhum —a date of special significance to the historical memory of the people.
