On July 6, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia, Oleg Bartsits, received a delegation from the Republic of Ghana, who arrived in the country on an official visit to participate in celebrations marking the 2,510th anniversary of the founding of the town of Sukhum.

The meeting was held in a friendly, trusting, and constructive atmosphere, laying the foundation for an active dialogue with the Republic of Ghana as a promising partner on the African continent.

During the meeting, Oleg Bartsits warmly welcomed the Ghanaian representatives to the capital of the Republic of Abkhazia, Sukhum, expressing appreciation for their willingness to develop direct contacts despite the significant geographical distance separating the countries.

"On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and myself, I am sincerely pleased to welcome the distinguished representatives of the Republic of Ghana to Abkhazia. You have come a long way, and today's visit is an extremely joyful and significant event for our country. We know and highly appreciate the Republic of Ghana as a strong, stable, and highly developed African state, possessing powerful economic potential and modern infrastructure. We are honored and delighted to host our Ghanaian friends."

The Foreign Minister briefed the guests on the Republic of Abkhazia's foreign policy priorities. He emphasized that the Republic of Abkhazia, while relying on strong and unwavering allied relations with the Russian Federation, with which trade, economic, investment, and cultural ties are dynamically developing, is simultaneously pursuing a persistent and proactive course toward diversifying its international contacts. In this regard, it was emphasized that the African vector is a key one, and Abkhazia is actively working to establish mutually beneficial cooperation with a number of African countries in the areas of economics, trade, and education.

The meeting focused on a significant event: the signing of an agreement establishing sister city relations between the capital of the Republic of Abkhazia, Sukhum, and the municipality of the same name in the Republic of Ghana. Oleg Bartsits expressed confidence that the similarity in names is a symbolic sign, and the agreement itself will open the door to a "two-way street" for the two countries to move toward each other.

For his part, the head of the Ghanaian delegation, Traditional Leader and King of Suhum, Barina Amoako Darko, thanked the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia for the exceptionally warm and welcoming reception and conveyed greetings from the residents of his municipality.

"We are proud of the opportunity to establish a strong partnership with the capital of Abkhazia. Having seen Sukhum, we are delighted by its beauty and unique character. Our mission is very important. I am convinced that the foundations of this visit were laid by our ancestors. Our visit is not a one-time event. We are committed to regular exchanges of delegations and long-term coordination of efforts to improve the quality of life of the peoples of both countries. Ghana's doors are now open to our Abkhazian brothers."

During the exchange of views, Oleg Bartsits presented the guests with a detailed overview of Abkhazia's economic, logistical, and tourism opportunities. In particular, it was emphasized that, thanks to its unique climate and natural resources, Abkhazia welcomes approximately 1.5 million tourists annually. The Foreign Minister drew the guests' attention to the modernization of the country's transport infrastructure: the successful operation of the V.G. Ardzinba Sukhum International Airport, where the Ghanaian delegation arrived, as well as the active development of the seaport network, which facilitates both trade and cargo exchanges, as well as passenger transportation. The export position of the Abkhazian agro-industrial complex, demonstrating high efficiency in traditional markets, primarily Russia, was emphasized.

Particular attention was paid to the humanitarian track during the conversation. The parties identified youth cooperation, particularly through student exchanges, as one of the most promising areas of interaction.

At the end of the meeting, the parties confirmed their mutual readiness to thoroughly consider a package of mutual proposals across the entire spectrum of emerging bilateral cooperation, expressing their firm confidence that the signing of the Agreement will lay a solid foundation for a large-scale and long-term partnership between Abkhazia and Ghana.

The official meeting concluded with an exchange of commemorative gifts, emphasizing the sincere and friendly atmosphere of the dialogue.
