Kan Tania, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia met with Roman Dbar, the Director of the Institute of Ecology ANA and representative of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) Shiroma Satiapala. During the meeting the issue of the ecological situation in Abkhazia was discussed. In particular, they discussed various ways of dealing with palm weevil, which threatens plantations of palm trees in Abkhazia. Its large larvae cause significant damage to palm trees.
According to environmentalists, if no actions are taken now, then in the near future all the palm trees in Abkhazia may disappear.
Kan Tania said that the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry will consider the possibility of including this issue in the agenda of the second working group of the forthcoming round of the Geneva discussions. He also said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide all possible support in the fight against the palm weevil in Abkhazia.
On the territory of Abkhazia, the palm weevil first appeared about a year ago in the district of Gagra. The insect got to the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia together with palm seedlings brought from Spain.
