Commentary from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia regarding threats against Elchin Adzynba
14 August 2026 2

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia notes with concern reports of pressure on experts and human rights activists raising issues related to the rights of citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia.

In this regard, the situation surrounding Elchin Adzynba, a Turkish compatriot and associate professor is
particularly noteworthy.

During a speech at the UN Forum on Minority Issues in Geneva, Dr. Adzynba addressed issues related to the
international isolation of the Republic of Abkhazia, restrictions on freedom of movement, and the non-
recognition of documents of citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Following her speech, Elchin Adzynba was subjected to threats, pressure, and cyberattacks. She filed a
complaint with law enforcement agencies regarding these incidents.

On April 24, 2026, an official letter signed by five UN Special Rapporteurs was sent to the Government of Georgia. The document expressed concern about reports of pressure on Dr. Adzynba and requested clarification from the Georgian side. However, no clarification was provided. Moreover, Elchin Adzinba and her family continue to receive death threats.

We emphasize the importance of the attention of international human rights mechanisms to this issue. Such cases should not be ignored, and pressure on individuals exercising their right to freedom of expression and human rights activities must be objectively assessed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia will continue to consistently defend the interests of citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia in international forums. No instance of pressure or persecution of individuals speaking out in support of the Republic of Abkhazia and the rights of its citizens will go unnoticed.

We intend to utilize all available legal and diplomatic mechanisms to protect anyone who openly broadcasts
objective information about our country and its citizens.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia will definitely raise the issue of persecution and threats against Elchin Adzinba at the upcoming round of the International Discussions on Security and Stability in the Caucasus. The Abkhaz side will demand an official response and concrete answers from the Georgian side. This issue will not be removed from the agenda until we receive comprehensive clarifications and an objective assessment of what happened.
