Daur Kove, the Foreign Minister of Abkhazia commented to Apsnypress on the results of the presidential elections held in Georgia on November 28,2018.
Daur Kove, how do you think the past presidential elections in Georgia will affect the relationship between Abkhazia and Georgia?
We have to admit that the policy of the Georgian authorities towards Abkhazia has not undergone major changes over the past years and continues to be sharply aggressive. The Georgian authorities continue to pursue a policy of international isolation of Abkhazia, create obstacles to the freedom of movement and international communication of our citizens, implant in the minds of the international community false statements on the "occupation of Abkhazia."
Another serious concern is the process of increasing Georgia’s military potential with the support of the United States and other NATO countries, which is causing significant damage to the stability and security in the South Caucasus.
I would like to hope that with the election of a new president in Georgia, there will be some kind of reappraisal of values and a positive basis will be laid for establishing an interstate dialogue between our countries with the participation of states traditionally acting as mediators in the negotiation process between Abkhazia and Georgia.
I want to remind you that the people of Abkhazia unconditionally embarked on the path of building an independent, sovereign, democratic state and it is this fundamental circumstance that should be guided in building relations with our republic.
And in conclusion, I want to assure you that not a single “peace initiative”, whatever its origin, can become an alternative to the freedom and independence of Abkhazia.
I am confident that the only possible way out of this situation may be the recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and the subsequent building of full-fledged bilateral relations between our countries.
