Thirty-one years ago, on November 26, 1994, the Basic Law of the Republic of Abkhazia was adopted at the 12-th session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Abkhazia.
The Constitution of the Republic of Abkhazia was approved by popular vote on October 3, 1999. This historic step marked an important stage in strengthening of Abkhazia's modern statehood.
The document adopted during the difficult post-war period embodied the aspirations of the people of Abkhazia for freedom, justice, and independent development.
The Constitution enshrines the integrity, inviolability, and inalienability of the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia; proclaims the separation of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; and guarantees human rights and freedoms.
Thirty-one years later, the values enshrined in the Constitution serve as a reliable guide for the development of the state.
