August 26 marks the 17th anniversary of the recognition of the state independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Abkhazia by the Russian Federation. The historic Decree No. 1261 was signed by the President of Russia D.A. Medvedev on August 26, 2008.
This crucial decision became an act of restoring historical justice in relation to the Abkhazian people, who defended their right to self-determination during the national liberation struggle. Recognition of independence by Russia guaranteed the peaceful development and stability of the Republic of Abkhazia, created a reliable foundation for the security of our country and its citizens.
Over the past seventeen years, relations between Abkhazia and Russia, based on centuries-old traditions of friendship and brotherhood, have reached the level of comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance. Interaction is developing dynamically in all fields, including political, economic, social and cultural ones. Modern Abkhazia, relying on the solid foundation of Abkhazian-Russian cooperation, is confidently developing as an independent democratic state, strengthening its international positions and continues to consistently implement the course towards building a prosperous society.
