March 15 marks 33 years since the start of the March Offensive Operation to liberate Sukhum from Georgian occupation forces.
On March 15, 1993, Abkhazian forces crossed the Gumista River and captured strategically important heights near Sukhum. However, after bloody fightings on March 17 and 18, the Abkhazian units were forced to retreat to their original positions.
The March offensive was one of the most difficult during the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia (1992-1993). In this operation, our army lost 222 soldiers, several hundred were wounded, and 23 went missing.
Eternal memory to those who did not return home from the battlefields!
