Adress of Daur Cove, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia to Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General.

5 January 2017 7637
Dear Mr. Guterres!

Your address to the peoples of the world, made when you took office of the UN Secretary General on January 1, 2017 was taken with great hope and enthusiasm in the Republic of Abkhazia.

We fully share the principled view expressed in Your Appeal on achievement of a comprehensive peace which may not be achieved without overcoming differences and conflicts between nations and peoples.

The people of Abkhazia, who have passed through the horrors of war, experienced the hardships and deprivations of heavy post-war years, understands the importance and value of peace. Having defended their right to existence, the Republic of Abkhazia is sought to a peace agreement with Georgia, which would put an end to the long-term Georgian-Abkhaz conflict.

Representatives of Abkhazia take an active part in the Geneva discussions on security and stability in Transcaucasia, which are the only international format in which we have the opportunity to express our position, voice our opinion on issues of current importance for us. It should be emphasized that it is also the only international platform on which there are representatives of Abkhazia and Georgia.

However, while the representatives of Georgia have huge opportunity to voice their position, speaking at various international platforms, including such authoritative as the United Nations, than the Republic of Abkhazia is deprived of such opportunities. This fact put the Abkhaz and Georgian sides into unequal position, it also contributes to the formation of non-objective and biased presentation of the international community concerning the positions of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict as a whole.

According to our deep conviction such situation may not serve an achievement of peace and overcoming of existing differences.

I hope, dear Mr. Guterres, that 2017 will truly be a year of peace. But to make it possible, we must focus all our efforts to create conditions for equal and mutual consideration of interests.

Taking into account the above-stated, I consider it would be important and useful to give the opportunity to the Republic of Abkhazia for giving publicity to their opinion on issues related to the problems of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict in the United Nations platform. Such step from your side would serve as an important signal of a strong devotion to the peaceful settlement of conflicts, mutual, open and equal dialogue of the authoritative international organization headed by you.
