On August 14, 2024, the Official Representative Office of the Republic of Abkhazia in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic held a mourning event in Tiraspol on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the beginning of the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia 1992-1993.
The memorial event was attended by the Head of the Official Representative Office of the Republic of South Ossetia in Pridnestrovie Vitaly Yankovsky and Advisor to the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMR Sergey Shirokov.
Pridnestrovians who know and love Abkhazia came to honor the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Abkhazia and to lay fresh flowers.
Plenipotentiary Representative of the Republic of Abkhazia in Pridnestrovie Alexander Vataman noted: "On August 14, 1992, the peaceful silence on the Abkhazian land was interrupted by fierce volleys of gunfire, helicopter shelling, automatic and machine gun fire. On this day 32 years ago, the living world stood still in Abkhazia, the sense of time shifted - the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia began. In Georgia, their barbaric operation to occupy Abkhazia was called "Sword", assuming that with one quick strong blow they would cut the Republic apart and destroy it. The main emphasis was on the surprise of the attack, hoping to stun the Abkhazian people and paralyze their will to resist. On the first day of the war, the troops of the State Council of Georgia passed through the Gal, Ochamchira, Gulripsh districts and reached the eastern outskirts of Sukhum, where street fighting begins.
But the enemy who came to the land of Abkhazia did not take into account the main thing - such a united selfless resistance of the entire Abkhazian people. The call of the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba to fight for the freedom of the Fatherland was heard - the entire people stood in the ranks of defenders of Abkhazia, showing courage and bravery.
Before the Victory, on that tragic August day in 1992, there were still 413 days of war, 413 days of grief and loss, 413 days of heroism in the name of freedom and independence of Abkhazia. 32 years have passed, but no matter how far this date has gone into history, the memories of it will forever remembered by the Abkhazian people. In memory are the bitter moments of losing people who should not have died. All of them were filled with hopes and plans for life. They lived for goodness and love. In this war, the people of Abkhazia suffered a heavy, irreparable loss - two thousand seven hundred daughters and sons of Apsny laid down their lives, more than five thousand were wounded, two hundred are listed as missing.
Today in the Republic of Abkhazia is the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of the Fatherland. On this day of sorrow and prayer, Abkhazia remembers and honors the heroes of Apsny, all who showed fortitude and heroism, who selflessly fought the enemy, who at the cost of their own lives brought the long-awaited Victory closer."
