Commentary by Odyssey Bigvava, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia in connection with the adoption of the resolution by the UN Human Rights Council

The adoption of the resolution "Cooperation with Georgia" in the UN Human Rights Council and the subsequent statements by UK representatives are part of a long-running political performance aimed at discrediting of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Russian Federation.

Once again, we see how international institutions are being used to advance Georgia's one-sided and biased position. The terminology used in the resolution—"occupation" and "illegal military control"—has nothing to do with reality and grossly distorts the historical, political, and legal situation.

The Republic of Abkhazia is a sovereign state, whose right to independence was enshrined by the free expression of the will of our people. The Russian Federation, which acts as the guarantor of our security on the basis of mutual interstate treaties is a recognized subject of international law, providing Abkhazia with legitimate support.

Concerns by "human rights violations" and demands for "admission of international observers" are nothing more than tools of political pressure. We are open to dialogue, but only on the basis of equality and respect for our sovereignty, and not under the dictation of those who turn a blind eye to Georgia's aggressive policies, including its refusal to sign a legally binding agreement on the non-use of force.
