About the Ministry
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia was established by the Decree of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Abkhazia on May 17, 1993 in the midst of the Georgian-Abkhaz war, when the people of Abkhazia were threatened with total extermination.
The professional holiday of Abkhaz diplomats, the Day of the Diplomatic Official of the Republic of Abkhazia is annually celebrated in Abkhazia on May 17.
The Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia carried out the foreign policy activities and achieved meaningful results, often thanks to the selfless work of Abkhaz diplomats in conditions of the isolation, economic embargo and constant threat of a new war on the part of Georgia.
In different years the foreign policy department of Abkhazia was headed by: Tarkil S., Ginjolia S., Lakerbaya L., Ozgan K., Akhba I., Shamba S., Gvindzhia M., Chirikba V.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia is headed by Kove D.V. since October 4, 2016.
Interaction with the representatives of the oldest and most influential diplomatic schools such as Russia, the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany and constant contacts with international organizations such as the UN, the OSCE, the EU and other participants in the process of the Georgian-Abkhazian settlement conflict has had a significant impact on the formation of professional Abkhaz diplomacy.
The main priorities of the foreign policy of the Republic of Abkhazia are:
· security and economic development of the country;
· achieving broad international recognition and expanding international contacts;
· development and strengthening of allied relations and strategic partnership with the Russian Federation;
· attraction of foreign investments;
· protection of the rights of citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia abroad.
