At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Committee for Repatriation 12 tons of bottled drinking water of the highest category was sent to the Syrian Arab Republic as humanitarian aid on 9 August. The transportation of water takes place with the assistance of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

Kodor the bottled drinking water of the highest category is extracted from artesian wells located in Gulripsh district of Abkhazia.

    To date about 5 million people in Syria do not have free access to drinking water. The water crisis in Syria was triggered by an armed conflict during which water supply systems also suffered.

     Syria is a home of the large Abkhaz Diaspora whose representatives are fighting against international terrorism.
