Statement by the Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia
18 November 2016 904
On November 16 the Committee of Deputy Ministers discussed the 14th consolidated report on the conflict in Georgia, which was prepared by the Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland.

Traditionally, the report notes the Council of Europe's commitment to Georgia's territorial integrity and inter-state relations between the Republic of Abkhazia and the Russian Federation are characterized as "occupation" by Russia of Abkhazia. A significant part of the report is devoted to the discussion of the situation of human rights in the Republic of Abkhazia.

Taking into account the presence of biased and unfair assessments of the situation in the Republic of Abkhazia in the report, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia states the following.

Over the past two decades, since the victorious end of Patriotic war of the people of Abkhazia in 1992-1993, which resulted in heavy losses by the Georgian occupation troops and their forced flee, various European institutions such as the Council of Europe, continued to regularly publish "expert" reports that in a very negative way assess the situation in the Republic of Abkhazia. It is typical that during the preparation of such reports, none of the European "experts" visited the Republic of Abkhazia to study the situation on the spot and receive objective information.

Unfortunately, it became traditional to publish divorced from the reality reports, which do not bear any objective information, but merely repeat the position of the Georgian side.

The result of these provocative actions of official European institutions in relation to the Republic of Abkhazia became a significant increase of distrust in the Abkhaz society to any EU initiatives.

Based on the foregoing, the Abkhaz side intends to raise this issue during the forthcoming visit of the Co-chairs of the Geneva discussions, and to give an adequate assessment of such extremely negative thrusts of European structures towards our country.
