International Roundtable " Close and distant Syria" was organized by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Abkhazia in the conference hall of the hotel "Atrium Victoria".
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia Daur Kove and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Abkhazia Semyon Grigoriev addressed the participants of the round table with a welcoming speech.
Daur Kove in his opening speech stressed the importance of the settlement of the Syrian crisis to ensure peace and security in the Middle East and emphasized the important role of Russia in their just resolution. "The Syrian crisis is now in the focus of world politics. Security and stability in the Middle East largely depends on its fair resolution, which is located in close proximity to the South Caucasus. We see the role played by our strategic partner and ally - the Russian Federation - in resolving the Syrian crisis. To a large extent it is the decisive actions by Russia which allow restraining the onslaught of terrorist groups in Syria," - he said.
Abkhazian Foreign Minister stressed that the situation in Syria causes an increased interest in Abkhazia. "Republic of Abkhazia is worried about what is happening today in the Syrian Republic. In addition to the purely humanitarian aspect of the problem, we consider the fact that there is a significant population of the Abkhazian-Circassian Diaspora. A few years ago, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia, and the State Committee for Repatriation an important humanitarian action has been carried out - the return of about 500 our compatriots from a country covered with civil war to their historical homeland. We are showing an increased interest in everything that is happening in Syria and in accordance with our capabilities, will continue to not ignore this important region for us", - he added.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Abkhazia Semyon Grigoriev noted that in Syria for the first time was repulsed the policy of controlled chaos, which was conducted by the United States over the last decade. "Frank interference in the affairs of sovereign states, aimed at overthrowing the legally elected governments. Syria was the culmination of this process. If a year ago the Russian president did not take the decision to start the operation of military space forces of Russia against international terrorism in Syria, the legitimate government in Damascus would not exist today,"- he said.
